Featured Brand: Grey Duck

Beth, our Chief Operating Officer, paddling in the BWCAW with Ben from Grey Duck.

At Grey Duck, the team wakes up in the morning believing in the transformative nature of being outdoors. Their focus on building quality gear for a range of experiences, budgets, and expertise is what separates Grey Duck from other brands. Innovation is their core, and Grey Duck continually strives to make the outdoors more fun, more accessible, and more enjoyable.

Grey Duck Pillars: Quality, Approachable, & Timeless Design

Grey Duck uses leading construction methods to ensure you get a product that will perform as expected and provide the experience desired for years to come. They build products for a variety of experiences and a range of budgets to make your time on the water more accessible and fun for all. And Grey Duck believes there is beauty in timelessness, and designs their boards so that gear owners will still be proud to paddle them a decade from now.

But most importantly… Innovation!

Grey Duck delivers continuous improvement and innovation by building new boards and enhancing existing models each year to make SUPing and canoeing more appealing.

We here at Stone Harbor especially appreciate these features on Grey Duck canoes and paddleboards:

The patent-pending Grey Duck Sit/Carry System

Folks who fish love taking advantage of the Grey Duck Sit/Carry System.

This is an industry first transport system that allows a paddle board to be carried overhead with ease. It also doubles as a seat, giving riders the ultimate in comfort both on and off the water. We love these features for folks who dream of bringing their SUP into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) or for those who want a simple setup to fish with. The Sit/Carry System can be added to the All Day Hybrid or the Quetico, depending on if the user wants a solid multi-use board or a touring-specific board.

The “Swiss-Army Knife” of Canoes - The Vision 17

Grey Duck’s focus on classic designs that can flex between touring and day trips, lakes and rivers, and be comfortable both loaded and unloaded sets them apart. Inspired by Rheaume's craftsmanship and dedication to higher quality, as well as the Twin Cities’ thirst for a BWCAW canoe, Grey Duck set out to build a lake touring canoe in their Roseville, MN location that was truly unique in the marketplace. Enter the Vision 17.

A Vision 17 being built at the Grey Duck facility in Roseville, MN.

The Vision 17 is a canoe that we think is one of the premier lake touring boats on the market. Here’s how they’re doing it:

  • Vacuum resin infusion technology is used to build composite hulls as opposed to wet laying the canoes. This allows Grey Duck to lay cloth in their mold dry and then infuse the canoe with resin as the last step in the process. This creates a great working environment, and a strong and light hull with the ideal resin to cloth ratio.

  • Grey Duck is trimming out the canoes in wood, and the warmth and look is second to none. While aluminum is cheaper and lighter, we feel wood better represents an heirloom product.

  • At 17’9” long and 34.5” wide, this is a super efficient touring shape. The 1.5” of bow rocker and 1” in the stern creates a canoe with amazing tracking, yet remains responsive to turning on a dime when needed.

  • Grey Duck’s signature bow-dip color scheme is unique and creates the opportunity for a Tri-tone palette that lends itself to an almost infinite amount of color combinations. They also offer a more traditional white bottom look as well. Here at Stone Harbor we work directly with Grey Duck to help our customers fine tune the look of their canoes to match preferences.

  • Using MAXGUARD gel coat on their canoes allows Grey Duck to not only create unique looking boats, but also offer UV and abrasion resistance that we feel is worth the extra effort and slight increase in weight.

And the little touches that we love.

  • The 5” Weedless Shallow Water Fin: This new, weedless shallow water fin is great for exploring areas where shallow water is the norm. Grey Duck jammed the surface area of a normal 10" dolphin fin into a new shape with just a 5" draft. We’ve found this to be the perfect fin for paddling weedy lakes, ocean flats, or for rivers where water is flowing and below surface structure is unknown. This fiberglass fin works with all boards that have a standard fin box.

  • Unique SUP Construction: The shape of the board is foundational in the experience you’ll have on water, and Grey Duck has taken the time to create their own. When developing a new shape, they create it by hand until the prototype has been tested to satisfaction in the field before a scan of the board is taken so a CNC machine can replicate the shape. We’ve shared the Grey Duck article that fully explains the process, and definitely think it’s worth exploring.

  • Cozy Canoe Features: Grey Duck took the time to create a yoke that is our current favorite due to how comfortable it is to use. In addition, they included a slight curve to their seats to replace the stiff, straight seats of old for added comfort during long paddles. This can include an actual seat for a third rider, which can be added to most styles by request. But our favorite feature is how light Grey Duck canoes can be, typically ranging from 35lbs to 55lbs total.

Whether you’re looking for a canoe or stand-up-paddleboard for yourself or a loved one, the team at Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply can help you find the right gear. Take a look at our current inventory, or explore our tour and rental options to get your hands on the equipment before you buy it.
